Hurricanes are the greatest environmental threat. The islands caught only the tail end of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, but it caused severe damage to the sugar crop and power supplies. As in the rest of the Caribbean, benefits from encouraging tourism must be set against potential ecological damage. The government has shown sensitivity, with strict preservation orders on the remaining rainforest and on indigenous monkeys.
